The standard definition of climate change is that it is any long-term change in the patterns of average weather of a specific region or the Earth as a whole.
Most scientists believe that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are influencing the earth’s climate. Although there’s much more to learn about the cause and effect of climate change, consensus is building that steps should be taken now to reduce these emissions.
In fact, concern over climate change is leading policy makers to push for a reduction in greenhouse gases emitted by each of us and most of all by industry.
Greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, are the byproducts of generating electricity—especially coal-fired power which makes up 85 percent of the electricity Ameren companies generate.
We, at Ameren, and many others in the power sector recognize our front-line role in addressing climate change. That’s why as we work to solve the issues raised by the need to address climate change, we must make sure that the approach is fair. And that it works for all Americans.
